Addressing the Era of Climate "Boiling" with Human-based Solutions (HbS) | ZHOU Talks about Ecological Civilization (Lecture 256)

The World Meteorological Organization and other agencies announced on August 8 that July 2023 will be the month with the highest global average temperature since meteorological records, and it may be the hottest month in 120,000 years. Facing the current situation of "boiling" in the world, Dr. ZHOU Jinfeng, Secretary-General of  China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) interpreted climate change from the perspective of Human-based Solutions (HbS) in an interview with the media .

Regarding global warming, UN Secretary-General even said that the era of global warming is over and the era of "boiling" is coming. What do you think of this warning?

This warning is not excessive at all, it is very appropriate. Global warming is no longer able to accurately describe today's situation. For warmth, many people may still feel it, and it is not necessarily a bad thing. But when it comes to "boiling", everyone will have a very strong feeling that people cannot survive in boiling water. The continuous global warming has caused large-scale occurrence of extreme weather, which has a very serious impact on biodiversity. As for the "boiling" era, it has already shown that the response to climate change has reached an extremely urgent situation and stage.

As the world warms, one concern is the melting of polar glaciers. According to the report, the melting of the Arctic has accelerated in the past 40 years, and then its warming has also accelerated. What impact do you think this will have? What should we do in the face of climate change in the Arctic?

Climate change in the Arctic and Antarctic has a significant impact on the climate of the entire globe. It also has a huge impact on sea level rise. The melting of glaciers causes a large amount of cold water to flow into the sea, resulting in changes in ocean currents, which will have a very powerful impact on the earth's ecosystem and human survival. The impact of extreme weather caused by climate change, including floods, droughts and other disasters, will have serious negative impacts on human habitats, including biodiversity.

Under these influences, what can we do? What I want to emphasize is the Human-based Solution. In fact, most of these impacts are caused by human activities, which are the direct consequences of excessive greenhouse gas emissions caused by the rapid development of industrial civilization in the past one or two hundred years. How to solve this problem? Human-based Solutions are critical.

First of all, each of us should take active actions in all aspects of our basic necessities of life, such as reducing the use of disposable tableware, limiting excessive packaging,  promoting green travel and etc.. Secondly, we can promote changes in the enterprise through our choices. If we can consciously buy low-carbon products and light-packaged products, this choice oriented towards saving low carbon and green recycling will drive companies to make changes. Furthermore, the whole society is currently actively promoting the realization of the "double carbon" goal. We not only take actions, but also advocate and call for changes in policies. The choices of each of us, superimposed and accumulated, can promote changes from individuals to enterprises to policy levels. The superposition and accumulation of the choices of each of us can promote changes from the individual to the enterprise to the policy levels. Therefore, Human-based Solutions are crucial to jointly build a community of life on earth and a community of shared future for mankind, and then build a sustainable future for mankind.
