Start the New Semester Without Plastic Book Jackets!

As the new semester is approaching in China, a variety of goods of online stationery stores are sold out, including plastic book jackets. Though popular among students and their parents, this item will cause huge environmental costs and have a negative impact on the ecological environment and human health.

According to statistics, primary and secondary school students in China use at least 1.94 billion plastic book jackets every semester, which will cause plastic pollution and health hazards. At present, the plastic book jackets commonly used by students can be divided into four kinds of materials: PE, PP, PET and PVC.

In terms of their down sides, first of all, the quality of plastic book jackets on the market is not guaranteed. Some plastic book jackets of poor quality contain harmful substances exceeding the standard, and long-term use will cause potential harm to human health. Secondly, for the plastic book jackets with guaranteed quality, because they are used in large quantities and then discarded, they cost enormous resources, and also produce a lot of plastic waste, which cannot be degraded and pollute the environment.

Therefore, the use of plastic book jackets is not the best option in terms of environmental impact or human health impact. Taking the environmental and health hazards of plastic book jackets into consideration, the Reduce and Pick-up Plastics Working Group of China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) has been advocating for many years that a campus of ecological civilization should say no to plastic book jackets. Four departments, including the General Office of the Ministry of Education and the General Office of the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, issued a notice in 2019, requiring primary and secondary schools not to force students to use plastic book jackets. After the notice was issued, it effectively reduced the use of plastic book jackets. Many schools have actively responded to the call and encouraged students to protect books in a more environmentally friendly way.
