CBCGDF BASE and its Volunteers Devote Continuous Attention to Crocodile Xiaohe
On the afternoon of August 7, 2023, the Biology and Technology Ethics Working Committee of China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (BASE - CBCGDF) noticed the reply from Xiamen 12345 Convenience Service Platform: The complaint regarding the health status of the estuarine crocodile Xiaohe (Crocodylus porosus) and the situation of other wildlife in the Zhongfeishiye Wildlife Park, handled by the Agriculture and Rural Bureau of Xiang'an District, Xiamen City, have been resolved.
The Agricultural and Rural Bureau of Xiang'an District, Xiamen City stated in its reply: Since May this year, the Bureau of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of Xiang'an District has "organized veterinarians to continue to strengthen the inspection and care of the crocodile Xiaohe's physical condition. Xiaohe's health is still in the process of recovery." That is to say, the crocodile Xiaohe is still recovering from his illness, and the management of the zoo, Zhongfeishiye Wildlife Park, will also adjust the amount of food fed to Xiaohe in real time according to his physical condition. At the same time, in response to complaints from CBCGDF volunteers that the macaque Huanhuan in the zoo was locked in a large iron cage for exposure to the sun, and the water used to feed red-crowned cranes(Grus japonensis) in hot weather was too dirty, the Agriculture and Rural Bureau of Xiang'an District responded to urge the Wildlife Park to install sun protection measures for macaques, or plan to transfer them to a more suitable park for breeding and exhibition. The water source for the red-crowned cranes has been asked to be replaced in time.
As for whether the current retreat area can be opened to volunteers who care about the crocodile Xiaohe, the Agriculture and Rural Affairs Bureau of Xiang'an District, Xiamen City also stated in a public reply that it will continue to communicate with the Wildlife Park.
