Celebrating World Elephant Day 2023 by CBCGDF: Promote Synergies Between Conservation and Green Development
On August 12th every year, the world comes together to observe "World Elephant Day," a collective call to highlight the imperative of safeguarding these majestic creatures. In China, the campaign for elephant conservation has gained momentum, spearheaded by the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF), a national-level academic society committed to ecological well-being. The Beijing-based Foundation's unrelenting efforts encompass a range of initiatives, from advocating for the establishment of ecologically connected Asian Elephant National Park to advise governments at different levels in mitigating human-wildlife conflicts and fostering local biodiversity conservation through its Biodiversity Conservation in Our Neighborhood (BCON) initiative.
Elephants, as precious denizens of our planet, play a vital role in maintaining ecological equilibrium. Nevertheless, the encroachment of human activities has placed these magnificent creatures in peril, with fragmented habitats, illegal poaching, and human-animal conflicts among the pressing threats. To address these challenges, the Elephant Working Group of China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation has decided to co-organize a celebratory dialogue on August 11th, 2023, themed "Elephantine Challenge: Converging Conservation and Development."
This event presents a unique platform for experts to share their triumphs and advancements in the realm of elephant conservation. The symposium is poised to delve into the symbiotic relationship between preservation and progress, highlighting the interplay between ecological harmony and sustainable growth. The chosen theme is both astute and timely, underscoring that elephant conservation isn't merely about protecting a species; it's about upholding the stability of entire ecosystems.
In China, elephant conservation transcends a single endeavor and permeates multiple domains. The CBCGDF champions the creation of an Asian elephant national park with ecological connectivity, thereby offering expansive sanctuaries for these majestic creatures. Furthermore, the society provides decision-making counsel to the government, aiming to lessen conflicts between human beings and the large-sized wildlife, ensuring harmonious coexistence.
The significance of elephant conservation reverberates beyond the survival of just one specific species; it resonates with human interests as well, according to Dr Jinfeng Zhou, the Secretary-General of CBCGDF. Elephants act as guardians of ecosystems, regulating vegetation growth, upholding forest vitality, offsetting carbon emission, and safeguarding water sources. Additionally, they hold the potential to invigorate local economies through ecotourism.
As we approach the notable occasion of World Elephant Day in 2023, following previous efforts, the strides taken by CBCGDF's Elephant Working Group aren't merely an homage to these creatures; they are a resounding global message advocating for nature preservation and sustainable development. The endeavor for elephant conservation will persist, ensuring that these gentle giants thrive and continue to bestow irreplaceable value upon our world.
