Dr. Jinfeng Zhou Addressing the "Blue Eyes in Action": Urgent Call for Marine Biodiversity Conservation

On the morning of August 9th, 2023, Dr. Jinfeng Zhou, Secretary General of China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF), delivered an opening speech at the third “Blue Eyes in Action” awareness-promotion event held in Zhoushan, Zhejiang. In his address, Dr. Zhou emphasized the significance of marine biodiversity conservation, sparking contemplation among attendees.

Dr. Zhou highlighted that the ocean constitutes one of the Earth's most expansive ecosystems. It not only nurtures invaluable mineral and biological resources but also maintains global climate stability. However, in recent years, human activities have generated potential repercussions for marine ecological systems, posing an unprecedented threat to marine biodiversity. Many rare species are in urgent need of effective protection measures. He stressed that safeguarding marine biodiversity is an imminent priority, necessitating concerted efforts from society as a whole and the implementation of practical, impactful measures to mitigate this crisis.

Dr. Jinfeng Zhou's particular attention turned to the younger generation. He called upon children to cultivate a love for nature and a spirit of scientific exploration from an early age. In his view, youths are the future guardians of the environment. Only by possessing a genuine environmental consciousness and scientific literacy can they better protect marine biodiversity in the future. He encouraged youngsters to engage in tangible environmental actions, enabling them to experience firsthand the beauty and fragility of the ocean, thereby deepening their understanding of the importance of biodiversity.

The entire opening speech resonated with profound appreciation for marine ecosystems and hope for the future. Dr. Zhou's discourse not only alerted people to the urgency of marine biodiversity conservation but also awakened a sense of responsibility to actively partake in environmental conservation efforts. The 'Blue Eyes in Action' event, jointly initiated by Xianqu Co., Ltd and the Natural Resources News, and the Second Institute of Oceanography, Ministry of Natural Resources, aimed at fostering public understanding of deep-sea ecosystems. The event, themed 'Understanding Deep-Sea Ecosystems,' engaged the public, leaders, oceanographic researchers, local residents of Zhoushan, and schoolchildren in coloring marine life illustrations. This endeavor aimed to provide a tangible comprehension of marine life, particularly deep-sea organisms, and to raise awareness about the importance of safeguarding marine environments.
