Lulu Chen: Suggestions on the High-quality Development of Horticultural Conophytum | Clean Internet for Conophytum (CIC-110)

One of the important reasons why the market of wild Conophytum plants has formed is that the horticultural level of such species is not high enough. Here are several suggestions for the development of domestic market of horticultural Conophytum.

I. Efforts should be put into the horticultural selection of original species. Selection can be based on certain features such as size, color and pattern for cultivation and stabilization.

II. Research and cultivation of cross-breeding deserve more attention. Compared with the selection of original species, cross-breeding requires a shorter period of time for new varieties of Conophytum. However, it needs plenty of experiment and practice. For example, Conophytum “Rose Dawn” and Conophytum “Mabel’s Milkman” bred by Steven Hammer are popular all over the world. The popularity of crossbreeds means that there is a promising market for them.

III. It is helpful to form communities in the industry. When the Botanical and Horticultural Working Group of China Biodiversity is promoting the initiative of Clean Internet for Conophytum, the fact is more obvious that there is no such an organized community for the protection of Conophytum. While the merchants of wild Conophytum plants have formed several interest groups. If horticulturists and hobbyists can come together and build a healthy and sustainable community, like MSG in the UK, it is possible that a stable market might be established for Conophytum like what has been done for Phalaenopsis.

IV. Incentive Mechanism. In order to promote the horticultural development of Conophytum, stimulate the research of horticulturalists and fight against the illegal trade of wild plants, it is advisable to set up an incentive mechanism for horticultural Conophytum.
