CBCGDF OceanWetlands Working Group Suggests the Future Industrial Development of Shenzhen

In late July 2023, the Shenzhen Science and Technology Innovation Commission issued a notice on the public solicitation of opinions on the “Shenzhen City on Several Measures to Accelerate the Cultivation and Development of Future Industries (Draft for Comments)”, and the public solicitation of opinions from all walks of life. OceanWetlands Working Group of China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation actively responded to the call and put forward four suggestions for reference after careful research and discussion. The following is Recommendation 1.

Recommendation 1: it is suggested to add “sustainability”.

In the international context, “future industries” usually refer to those industries that are forward-looking, innovative, and sustainable. Among them, sustainability is an important feature, but there is a lack of “sustainability” in this “Shenzhen City on Several Measures to Accelerate the Cultivation and Development of Future Industries (Draft for Comments)”.

Sustainability is the inherent requirement of “future industry”. Specifically, it mainly includes the following aspects:

  1. The inclusion of “sustainability” is in line with the ethical requirements of scientific and technological innovation to ensure environmental protection and ecological balance. For a long time, many countries have gone through stages of development where traditional industries have caused serious damage to the environment, including air, water, and soil pollution, and loss of biodiversity. The future development of the industry should avoid repeating these mistakes, and reduce the negative impact on the environment and maintain the ecological balance by adopting clean energy and low-carbon technologies. It is not only for economic benefits, but also for social responsibility. Green industries can meet people’s needs for healthy, environmentally friendly and sustainable lifestyles, and embody the ethical responsibility of businesses and organizations.
  • 2. Adding “sustainability” is a need to address climate change. The industry of the future should be closely related to climate change response and promoting carbon equity. The large amount of greenhouse gas emissions brought about by traditional industries is one of the main causes of climate change. Future industries will need to adopt low-carbon, zero-emission technologies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and mitigate the effects of climate change.
  • 3. Ensure efficient use of resources. Traditional industries are usually at the cost of over-exploitation and waste of resources, resulting in resource shortages. In the future, the industry should pay attention to the sustainable use of resources, adopt the model of circular economy and efficient use of resources, and reduce excessive dependence on limited resources.
  • Ensure economic sustainability. The green industry is closely related to sustainable economic development. It should be economically sustainable, create jobs and improve living standards without harming the opportunities of future generations.
