Rescuing Birds and Eradicating Invasive Species | National Ecology Day Public Welfare Activities

August 15 marks China’s National Ecological Day. Wang Xiaoye, director of Baiyangdian White Crane Conservation Area of China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) organized a public welfare activity themed “The First wild release and eradication of invasive species Flaveria bidentis (L.) Kuntze in 2023 Migratory bird migration season” to teach the public to protect the ecological environment around and maintain ecological security.

During the activity, the volunteer team released a young Red-rumped Swallow, which was rescued due to the destruction of its nest. After 10 days of feeding, it had the ability to fly and survive. After a comprehensive assessment, it was released in the small wetland habitat at the activity site.

Volunteers also released a subadult Falco amurensis, which was rescued due to weakness. Falco amurensis is the bird of prey that migrates the farthest distance. It is China’s national second-class key protected wild animal. It lives in forests, grasslands, open hills, plains and foothills, mainly hunting various insects, such as locusts, crickets and so on.

Flaveria bidentis (L.) Kuntze will seriously occupy the living space of other plants. Once invaded farmland, it will threaten agricultural and animal husbandry production and ecological environment security. It is included in the “Key Management of alien invasive species List”. During the event, volunteers worked together to eradicate them and make enough space for local plants.
