Biodiversity Conservation in Our Neighborhood (BCON)
Background
The Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) has released a landmark report that serves as a clarion call to humanity. This report highlights the unprecedented rate at which global biodiversity is plummeting, marking an epochal decline in the history of our species. The speed of species extinction is accelerating, foretelling the potential extinction of up to a million species in the foreseeable future. In light of this dire trajectory of biodiversity loss and with the aim to mitigate this crisis, fostering public engagement in nature conservation has become paramount.
Responding to this urgent need and the imperative to protect our shared natural heritage, the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (referred to as China Green Foundation or Green Foundation) initiated an inspiring campaign in 2020: Biodiversity Conservation in Our Neighborhood (BCON). This initiative is founded on the recognition that safeguarding biodiversity demands immediate action, collective commitment, and an unwavering dedication to the preservation of our planet's intricate ecosystems.
BCON & Significance
Biodiversity Conservation in Our Neighborhoods (BCON) is an approach that encourages the protection of biodiversity in people's daily lives and activities. This includes minimizing human disturbances to nature, reducing interference with wildlife, protecting biodiversity, respecting the value of wilderness, and conserving natural habitats in human's surrounding areas. BCON breaks the traditional idea that biodiversity conservation only happens within protected areas, and promotes the appreciation of nature in places that are accessible to people. One of the advantages of BCON is that anyone can take action and contribute to biodiversity conservation. This approach is particularly effective in densely populated urban areas, and in agricultural practices.
BCON's aim is to promote harmonious coexistence between humans and nature. BCON helps to change the worldview that human survival is no longer a constant "battle" of human plunder against nature. As a methodology for protecting biodiversity, BCON balances both conservation and economic development, promoting sustainable economic and social development.
Operational Framework of Biodiversity Conservation in Our Neighborhood (BCON):
1. Promoting Mainstream Biodiversity Awareness through Mass Communication:
BCON is being championed by the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) through a network of approximately 40 new media platforms under the banner of CBCGDF Media. This dynamic approach seeks to drive the mainstream understanding of biodiversity, reaching a wide audience through various channels. CBCGDF Media receives a daily viewship of 40 million.
2. Launching the BCON Case Study Series:
One of the pivotal facets of BCON involves the introduction of a series of case studies. These cases illuminate and educate individuals on practical ways to conserve biodiversity within their immediate surroundings while concurrently reducing their ecological footprint. Through these real-world scenarios, BCON aims to instill a sense of responsibility and engagement in the general public.
3. Establishing BCON Demo Sites:
The establishment of BCON demonstration sites stands as a tangible testament to the commitment of the initiative. These diversified demo-sites serve as living textbook cases, showcasing effective biodiversity conservation practices in action. By creating these tangible examples, BCON demonstrates that biodiversity conservation is not just an abstract concept but a concrete, attainable goal that yields tangible benefits for ecosystems and communities alike.

Best Practices
1. Agriculture practice by BCON:Co-Growing with Weeds
Co-growing with Weeds, launched by scientists and conservationists by CBCGDF’s Biodiversity Conservation in Our Neighborhood (BCON), refers to the use of ecological niches, food chain, biodiversity, nutrient cycle, and other principles, using the competitive advantage of woody plants or tall crops against weeds, only a small amount of physical intervention to weeds, so as to achieve the symbiosis of weeds and fruit trees or tall crops; and weed communities to attract natural enemies of insects, to achieve the purpose of pest control. The "dance with grass" ecological planting model helps to eliminate herbicide and pesticide pollution from the source and is a new ecological agriculture model that can both resist drought and conserve moisture and significantly reduce labor input.

2. The Close Relationship Between aquaculture Ponds and Migratory Waterbirds
During the rest period in winter in the aquaculture ponds in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River in China, abundant food and relatively quiet habitats are of great significance to migratory birds. The aquaculture ponds here practice the concept of BCON, retain the traditional aquaculture production methods, do not carry out drug disinfection and clean up other creatures, but implement the method of sun-dried pond disinfection for pond management. This keeps the ecosystem of the pond intact and provides a habitat for migratory waterbirds.
