The 4th Conference on RS of Vegetation Pests and Diseases 2023 First Released Spatial Information Products for Forest and Grass Disease and Pest Monitoring and Prediction

On August 19, 2023, at the Fourth Conference on Remote Sense of Vegetation Pests and Diseases held in Hohhot, Inner Mongolia, the Aerospace Information Research Institute, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) released to the public the Spatial Information Products for Forest and Grass Disease and Pest Monitoring and Prediction for the first time.

In the past, the situation of pests and diseases in forests and grass was mainly observed by naked eye which is time-consuming, laborious, and has limited coverage. In recent years, remote sensing technology has made monitoring both precise and highly efficient.

Science & Technology is the primary productive force. The products released this time includes monitoring and prediction products for grassland locusts, rodents, and pine wood nematode diseases. Researchers of the Aerospace Information Research Institute have utilized satellite remote sensing technology and integrated ground survey data to achieve extensive monitoring of forest and grassland growth conditions. At the same time, they can accurately monitor and predict outbreaks of grassland locusts, rodents, and pine wilt diseases, providing strong support for scientific assessment of disaster impacts. During the conference, over 60 experts, scholars, and business representatives gave wonderful reports on the theory and application of remote sensing of vegetation diseases and pests.

Prof. Huang Wenjiang, the chairman of the conference, said his research team has begun to continuously release spatial information products for monitoring and predicting forest and grass diseases and insect pests, which has important theoretical and practical significance for ensuring the safety of forests and grasslands, maintaining biodiversity and promoting the sustainable development of ecosystems. These achievements have been widely promoted and applied.
