WANG Mingan: Advancing Whale Shark Conservation in the Gulf Region - Insights from the Regional Workshop Conservation Center in Qata
The Regional Whale Shark Conservation Center in Qatar plays a pivotal role in the protection and promotion of whale shark conservation, which has been a hub for marine life restoration and aquaculture since its inauguration in 2020 by the Prime Minister.
- Objectives and International Collaboration: The center's primary goal is to safeguard and advocate for the protection of whale sharks, which are migratory species known to traverse various areas within the Gulf. The center has actively engaged with other Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries and Pakistan. Future plans include extending this cooperation to Iran, Yemen, Kenya, Tanzania, and potentially further afield.
- Marine Science and Research Techniques: A dedicated marine scientist team at the center employs state-of-the-art techniques to monitor whale sharks in the El Shahin area. Satellite telemetry is utilized to track the migratory patterns of these sharks, identifying crucial habitats that require protection. Laser photogrammetry aids in measuring the body size of individual sharks and assessing their health, revealing scars likely resulting from interactions with propellers, fishing gear, or other sharks. Underwater photography assists in determining the sex of the sharks, providing valuable data on population ratios.
- Conservation Outcomes and Public Education: During the current season, the team has encountered over 600 whale sharks, capturing more than 1,000 images and collecting substantial data. The analysis of this data is ongoing. The center also leverages social media to raise public awareness about shark conservation, the measures being taken, and the threats faced by these marine creatures.
- World Shark Forum: On May 22nd, the center, supported by the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change of Qatar, hosted the inaugural regional World Shark Forum. The event gathered 15 speakers from nine countries, discussing the conservation and management status of whale sharks in their respective nations. The presentations are set to be published soon, with the forum intended to be an annual event, providing a platform for yearly updates on whale shark conservation across the region.
