Carbon Pricing’s Function on Reducing Fossil Fuel Subsidies and Promoting Decarbonization | CBCGDF Climate Change Working Group

Carbon pricing, a mechanism that assigns a cost to carbon emissions, is emerging as a key strategy for reducing fossil fuel subsidies and promoting decarbonization. By placing a financial value on carbon, carbon pricing provides a clear economic incentive for businesses and consumers to reduce their reliance on fossil fuels and invest in cleaner alternatives.

The role of carbon pricing in this context is twofold. Firstly, it can help to internalize the external costs of fossil fuel use, which are often borne by society in the form of environmental degradation and health impacts. This internalization can make fossil fuels more expensive, effectively reducing the need for subsidies that artificially lower their costs.

Secondly, carbon pricing can stimulate innovation and investment in low-carbon technologies. As the cost of carbon rises, renewable energy sources and energy-efficient practices become more competitive, driving the market towards decarbonization. This shift can lead to the development of new industries and jobs, contributing to economic diversification and resilience.

To be effective, carbon pricing must be implemented in a way that is fair and equitable. This includes ensuring that the revenues generated are used to support vulnerable communities and sectors that are most affected by the transition away from fossil fuels. It also involves engaging in transparent dialogue with stakeholders to build consensus around the design and implementation of carbon pricing policies.

By leveraging carbon pricing as a tool for reducing fossil fuel subsidies, we can create a more sustainable and economically viable energy system. This approach not only supports climate goals but also fosters a more efficient and resilient economy that is better equipped to face the challenges of the 21st century.
