CBCGDF Volunteers Carry out the First Bird Patrol This Autumn to Combat Illegal Bird Hunting and Clean up Bird-catching Nets

On September 6, 2024, police officers from Baoshan Town Police Station in Beilin District, Suihua City, Heilongjiang Province, jointly patrolled illegal bird hunting in Baoshan Town with volunteers from Suihua Wetland Conservation Area (CCAfa) of China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF), supervisors and information officers of Suihua City Wildlife Conservation Team.

This operation was the first patrol organized by volunteers from CBCGDF Suihua Wetland Conservation Area in autumn. Among them, the dead birds found were 3 sparrows, 2 black-faced buntings(Emberiza spodocephala), 1 common rosefinch (Carpodacus erythrinus), and two live sparrows. Afterwards, the police officers of the police station conducted publicity and popularization of the law to the masses, and also hoped that through the supervision, publicity and participation of the masses, they could jointly protect local wildlife, protect biodiversity, and achieve harmonious coexistence between man and nature.

After 4 hours of patrol, a 12-meter-long bird-catching net was found in the cornfields around Baoshan Town. When volunteers were clearing the bird-catching net through the weeds, they found that the net should have been there for a long time, but there were still wild birds that were unfortunately stuck and unable to escape, including 6 dead birds and 2 live birds.

Volunteers from the CBCGDF CCAfa in Suihua and police officers from the Baoshan Town Police Station in Beilin District, Suihua City, were on the scene, but they did not find any traces of the bird catcher. So the two sides worked together to dismantle all the bird-catching nets nearby and handled the dead birds harmlessly. The only two remaining live birds were rescued and released on the spot.
