"Releasing" or "Killing"? One Ton of Dead Fish Salvaged in One Day! | CBCGDF BASE
Recently, the news of " Due to disorderly release, up to 1 ton of dead fish is caught in one day in Shanghai " has caught people’s attention. According to the report, after the 42-kilometer shoreline of Suzhou River in Shanghai was connected, citizens often release various fish such as crucian carp, carp, and eel etc. in the river in order to seek blessings.
The release of
these fish was intended to allow them to live freely in the river, but the
large number of dead fish on the surface of Suzhou River confirmed that such
releases are not advisable. Data from the past two years show that the number
of dead fish netted from Suzhou River is increasing year by year: from 6.82
tons in 2022 to 7.9 tons in 2023. So far this year, 7.5 tons fish have been
netted, with the highest daily netting amount reaching about 1 ton.
As early as 2022,
there was a large-scale fish death event in Suzhou River. Experts have long
provided the answer: the large-scale death is due to oxygen deficiency. Also, the
large number of dead fish has increased the workload of river management
personnel, because if the dead fish are not cleaned up in time, they will rot,
emitting a foul smell, polluting the environment, and are also prone to
breeding bacteria and spreading diseases. The death of a large number of
released fish also leads to the waste of food resources.
As Dr. Zhou
Jinfeng, Vice Chairman and Secretary-General of the China Biodiversity
Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF), has emphasized:
"Reducing interference is the best 'blessing' for nature. For nature,
arbitrarily introducing a certain organism into an environment is essentially
the same as littering, and it will destroy the ecological environment”. To learn
more about biodiversity conservation knowledge, spread the correct
environmental protection concept, carry out biodiversity conservation in our neighborhood
(BCON) in daily life, and to reduce the disturbance to nature and the
interference with wildlife, is not only beneficial for sustainable development
but also can achieve the purpose of seeking 'blessings'."
