LIU Zhenmin, China's Special Envoy for Climate Change: Exploring the Innovative Path of Carbon Neutral Industry Development with Chinese Characteristics

On September 22, 2024, the first working meeting of the Carbon Neutral Industry Development Innovation Committee jointly initiated by the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) was held in Beijing. Mr. LIU Zhenmin, China's Special Envoy for Climate Change, former Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations and former Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs of China, attended the meeting and made an important speech.

Liu emphasized that as one of the world's largest carbon emitters, China, in line with the principle of actively responding to climate change and building a community with a shared future for mankind, has proposed and implemented the "dual carbon" goals, which has boosted the confidence of other countries in the world to respond to climate change. The world is paying attention to China's actions and trends in implementing the "dual carbon" work.

In August 2024, the "Opinions on Accelerating the Comprehensive Green Transformation of Economic and Social Development" issued by the Chinese government required that the requirements of green transformation be integrated into the overall economic and social development. Liu pointed out that the implementation of the "dual carbon" goal is an inevitable choice to follow the trend of the times and an internal driving force for its own high-quality development. "At present, we must start the process of orderly separation from fossil fuels and energy transformation, and contribute to the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation and sustainable development."

The implementation of the national "dual carbon" goal is reflected in energy transformation and industrial upgrading. It is urgent to strengthen the integrated development of the industry and the application of technological innovation, drive industrial development, and explore the innovative path of carbon neutral industry development with Chinese characteristics. Liu said, "In this way, the establishment of the Carbon Neutral Industry Development Innovation Committee is particularly important."

Liu hopes that the "Carbon Committee", an innovative cross-industry and cross-departmental institution, can mobilize all walks of life across the country to form a cause supported by the people of the country, and build the "Carbon Committee" into an open, inclusive, and important platform serving the national "dual carbon" goals, enhance international discourse power, and help achieve the "dual carbon" goals.
