The Market Demand for Vegan Mooncakes is High, but There is Still a "Standard Void" | CBCGDF Standards Working Committee

The deputy secretary-general of the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF), Mr. MA Yong, paid special attention to the quality assurance issues of the popular vegan mooncakes in the market when discussing the various changes and problems brought about by the "Mooncake Quality General Rules" in an interview with the media.

Mr. MA Yong stated that the current standards and policies for mooncakes do not yet take into account the aspect of vegan mooncakes, including the absence of relevant content in the "Mooncake Quality General Rules". However, there is a significant market demand and social expectation for this segment.

To effectively promote the standardization of this field, the CBCGDF Standards Working Committee has formulated and issued the "Plant-based Food Standard". This standard applies to plant-based foods that do not contain animal ingredients including eggs, dairy, and honey; foods that contain eggs, dairy, and honey but no other animal ingredients, as well as foods that do not contain animal ingredients including eggs, dairy, and honey and the five pungent vegetables garlic, onion, shallot, leek, and Chinese chive.

Mr. MA Yong suggested that on the basis of the "General Principles of Mooncake Quality", some considerations in this regard should be made in the future series of mooncake standards, or when the "General Principles of Mooncake Quality" is revised in the future, so as to form some principled requirements and specifications. The establishment of the standard is actually promoting the standardization of vegan foods.
