Thumbs up! Dalian City Has Stopped Aerial Spraying for Seven Consecutive Ears | Protecting Biodiversity
According to the letter from the volunteers, Dalian City has stopped the aerial spraying operation that had been carried out for seven consecutive years. The volunteers of CBCGDF Dalian Insect Conservation Area who have been paying close attention to this matter for a long time described that "the mountain vegetation has recovered in the year when the aerial spraying operation was stopped", and sent many partial pictures of the lush and vibrant local forest ecology.
It is obvious that today, when we attach great importance to the harmonious coexistence of man and nature, under the guidance of the concept of ecological civilization, Dalian’s forest pest prevention and control strategies have kept pace with the times and made adjustments and changes.
Previously, since 2017, the Dalian City Administration Bureau has been spraying pesticides and controlling forest pests by aircraft in urban forests in the city from June to August every year (referred to as "aerial spraying"), and it has been implemented for 7 consecutive years. Aerial spraying is generally carried out in two times, each operation lasts about 2-3 days, and the interval between the two operations is about one month. Taking 2019 as an example, Dalian City carried out 60 aerial spraying operations in 2019 for urban forest pest control. The ultra-low-volume spraying of about 5.4 tons of 2% thiacloprid microcapsule suspension, which is said to be "highly efficient, low-toxic, and low-residue", was carried out, and the area of the spraying drug was about 43,000 mu.
After 7 years, Dalian finally stopped non-targeted aerial spraying of forests this year, giving the local ecology a rare window of respite and recovery, which is gratifying. I hope that more city managers can learn from Dalian and abandon the traditional "one-size-fits-all" approach of large-scale and indiscriminate spraying of pesticides by helicopters. On the premise of adhering to the protection of biodiversity, they can scientifically and meticulously manage local natural resources, implement classified policies, and find a sustainable development path that is more friendly to the ecological environment and human health in terms of forest pest control.
