Wild Boars Have Become A Disaster in Liupan Mountain, and Xiji, Ningxia Has Recruited "Hunters" to Hunt Them. What's Wrong with That?
On September 23, 2024, a "wild boar hunter" recruitment announcement issued by Xiji County, Guyuan City, Ningxia, quickly sparked heated discussions on the Internet.
In order to control the increasing number of wild boars, the local government plans to hunt 300 adult wild boars and allocate 720,000 yuan for this purpose. 720,000 yuan divided by 300 means that killing a wild boar is equivalent to a reward of 2,400 yuan. After the announcement of this notice, it immediately sparked a lot of controversy among the public on wildlife protection and human-animal conflicts, among which there are supporters and opponents, and there are many different opinions.
It is said that in recent years, with the improvement of the ecological environment, the number of wild boars in Xiji County has exploded. They are no longer hermits in the mountains, but frequently visit farmland and eat crops, threatening the livelihoods of local farmers. Wild boars not only destroy crops, but may also attack livestock, causing huge economic losses and psychological pressure on farmers. They cannot be beaten or caught, and ecological compensation is often difficult to obtain, so some farmers are "unable to speak out their sufferings."
The National Forestry and Grassland Administration has launched a "comprehensive pilot project to prevent and control wild boar damage" in 14 provinces and regions including Ningxia, and has also formed a special hunting team.
So is this scientific control or tragic killing?" Wild boar population control" may seem cruel to some people, but there is nothing wrong with it!
The reasons are as follows:
1. The number of wild boars in the area has exceeded the ecological carrying capacity of the local area. This excessive growth not only causes wild boars to frequently enter farmland and destroy crops, seriously affecting farmers' livelihoods, but may also destroy the ecological balance in the area. Therefore, scientific regulation of wild boar populations through moderate hunting is not only to revitalize the countryside, protect crops from wild boar harassment, protect the interests of local residents, but also to maintain the health and stability of the ecosystem.
2. Only 300 wild boars were killed, which would not affect the wild boar population.Judging from the number and targets of hunting, hunting 300 adult wild boars (over 40 kg) is not a large-scale indiscriminate killing, but only a control of the excessive number of adult wild boars. Avoiding excessive intervention in wild boar cubs and the overall population will not affect the population.
3. The connotation of “biodiversity”: not just “protection” but also “sustainable use”.The word "biodiversity" means more than just "protection"; it also includes the meaning of "sustainable use".The purpose of protecting biodiversity is to ensure that all living things on Earth and their habitats can maintain long-term health and balance, but this does not mean prohibiting human interaction with nature, not touching it at all, or hiding from wild boars. In fact, the health and maintenance of biodiversity often requires reasonable use, and hunting is a typical example. In many countries, hunting of "problematic wildlife" is open and permitted.
