SHEN Yihang: Due to the Typhoon, Chinese Mitten Crabs Fled Collectively, and Crab Farmers in Yangcheng Lake, Jiangsu Province Suffered Heavy Losses! | CBCGDF Media Reports
On September 16, 2024, the strong typhoon "Bebejia" landed in Shanghai, and then continued to go deep inland, bringing serious impacts to the Yangcheng Lake area in Xiangcheng District, Suzhou City, Jiangsu Province. Among them, the Chinese mitten crabs farmers suffered huge losses. The strong wind caused a large area of damage to the farmers' enclosures, and many Chinese mitten crabs(Eriocheir sinensis) took the opportunity to escape.
A farmer, Mr. SU, said to a reporter that he raised 20 acres of Chinese mitten crabs and suffered serious losses. ‘There has not been such a strong wind for many years,’he said.
It can be seen that the destructive power of this typhoon is beyond the expectations of many people. Often, the construction of breeding facilities and equipment is based on past experience; but with global warming, the frequency and destructive power of extreme weather have exceeded past experience.
At present, farmers throughout Yangcheng Lake are facing considerable economic pressure. The local government has reminded farmers to wait until the wind and waves subside before going to the breeding area to check the situation. At the same time, local government departments are also actively coordinating to help affected farmers apply for aquaculture insurance to reduce their losses.
