Striding Towards a Green Future, CBCGDF International Department Holds the 35th (Total 129th) Global Environmental Governance Capacity Building Workshop in 2024

On the morning of September 26, 2024, the International Department of the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF), the "Ocean and Wetlands" working group, and “Reduce and Pick up Plastics” Working Group jointly held the 35th (129th in total) Global Environmental Governance Capacity Building Workshop for 2024.

Scientific Communication

Aiming to enhance public awareness of the importance of biodiversity and to motivate more people to participate in actions to protect biodiversity, the heads of various communication platforms shared the latest data on scientific communication within a week. They deeply analyzed the data and weekly reports, clarified the effectiveness of communication activities, and emphasized the importance of producing a variety of communication materials. Participants discussed how to quickly capture hot social topics and promote the popularization of biodiversity from multiple perspectives to achieve cross-border effects in communication. At the same time, it is necessary to respond to public concerns in a timely manner, formulate more efficient and accurate communication plans, and communicate major events in a timely and comprehensive manner, strengthening communication and collaboration between various platforms.

Global Environmental Governance

The 16th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP16), the 29th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC COP29), and the 16th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD COP16) will be held from October to December 2024, and global environmental governance will usher in important moments. The world will jointly face challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss, and land degradation. The goal of these conferences is to set more ambitious goals and effective action plans, injecting new momentum into global sustainable development.

CBCGDF International Department has been invited by the Azerbaijan Youth Solidarity Public Alliance to jointly carry out green campus theme education exchange activities in Baku, Azerbaijan, in October and December 2024. The project will be supported by institutions such as the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of Azerbaijan, the host country of UNFCCC COP29. At the same time, as an observer to the three Rio Conventions, CBCGDF will send delegations to participate in the conferences, and hold exhibitions and side events.

CBCGDF has played an active role in this process. On September 21, 2024, as a co-organizer, CBCGDF held the "Ecology and Sustainable Development" Summit Forum in Hong Kong, discussing how to enhance the balance between ecological conservation and urban development, and build a highland of sustainable development talents. On September 22, 2024, the Carbon Neutralization Industry Development Innovation Committee co-initiated by CBCGDF held its first working meeting, promoting technology sharing and cooperation, precise accounting and application, international cooperation and mutual recognition, standard system construction, and the promotion of low-carbon technology.

In addition, the delegation of CBCGDF has prepared for the 5th Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC-5) for the elaboration of an international legally binding instrument on plastic pollution, including marine plastic pollution, to be held in Busan, South Korea, from November 25 to December 1, 2024. CBCGDF media will actively report relevant meeting information and the progress of treaty negotiations.

Policy and Standard Suggestions

In terms of policy suggestions, the Ocean and Wetlands Working Group organized a serious study of the national standard "Technical Specifications for Coastal Wetland Survey (Draft for Comments)", and proposed 8 suggestions on the ecological service functions of coastal wetland ecosystems and additional wetland surveys. The “Reduce and Pick up Plastics” Working Group proposed 20 suggestions on aspects such as packaging containers and related facilities, intelligent label technology and digital tags, label design, container definition and composition, and user responsibilities in the draft text of the "Container Cleaning Standard" in the PR3 standard and all were adopted.
