CBCGDF-OceanWetlands Submitted 8 Suggestions | National Standard "Technical Specification for Coastal Wetland Survey (Draft for Comments)"
Recently, we learned that the National Technical Committee for Standardization of Natural Resources and Territorial Spatial Planning issued a letter on September 10, 2024, about soliciting opinions on the national standard "Technical Specification for Coastal Wetland Survey (Draft for Comments)". The OceanWetlands Group of China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) responded positively to the call, and, after careful study, submitted 8 recommendations for reference in its scientific decision-making.
Recommendation 1: In the [Introduction] section, it is recommended to strengthen the elaboration of the ecosystem service function of coastal wetlands. It is recommended to increase the description of the role of coastal wetlands as fishery nurseries and the contribution of coastal wetlands to coastal economic development.
Recommendation 2: In the [Introduction] section, it is recommended to add the specific objectives of the wetland survey.
Recommendation 3: It is recommended that key terms such as coastal wetlands and wetland patches be further specified and elaborated.
Recommendation 4: In the part of [Survey Methods], it is suggested to put forward more specific recommendations on the survey methods and principles.
Recommendation 5: Regarding the part of 7 [Survey Preparation], it is particularly recommended to formulate detailed safety measures during the survey preparation stage)—— "Survey Ethics" (e.g. not to use drones to interfere with birds in the breeding season).
Recommendation 6: on the part of [8 [Boundary Determination and Type Delineation].
Recommendation 7. Regarding [9.1 Content of the survey]
1) It is recommended to consider climate change impacts.
2) It is recommended that public [full] participation be encouraged. The knowledge and experience of local residents should be fully utilized to improve the accuracy of the survey data.
(3) It is suggested to add "plastic pollution" to [9.2.5.4 Threatening factors].
(4) It is suggested to add "microplastics" as an indicator in [9.3 Detailed indicators and survey methods].
Recommendation 8: to add a new chapter [Environmental DNA (eDNA)].
Recommendation: To add a new section or sub-chapter in the regulations to clarify that eDNA technology is a method for wetland biodiversity survey, especially for aquatic organisms, benthic animals, fish and other species that are hidden or difficult to be found by traditional survey methods.
Reason: eDNA technology can significantly improve the efficiency and accuracy of wetland biodiversity monitoring, especially in the survey of complex ecosystems in coastal wetlands, which has a wide application potential. Moreover, eDNA collection only requires obtaining environmental samples (e.g. water samples), causing little damage to the environment and not interfering with the natural behaviors and habitats of species.
