47th Anniversary of the UNCCD: Advances and Retreats between People and Sand and Inheritance | CBCGDF Historical Research
47 years ago, from August 25 to September 17, 1977, at the same time when the autumn wind was gradually rising, the United Nations Conference on Desertification (the predecessor of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification, UNCCD) was held in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya. The scale of that conference was unprecedented: 2.3 million people participated in the preparations, 93 countries sent delegations, and more than 800 people including 78 non-governmental organizations and well-known experts attended the conference.

When that conference was held, the world was facing severe challenges from desertification. And some of the response measures taken after the conference did not achieve the expected results.
47 years later, on August 27, 2024, the "Co-building Ecological Security Barrier and Green Development Academic Conference and the Establishment Conference of the Green Link Fund of China Green Development Association" co-hosted by the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) and the "Belt and Road" International Science Organization Alliance (ANSO) was held. The "Blocking Dust, Planting Green Together, and Protecting Homeland" China-Mongolia Sand Control and Green Development Typical Demonstration Ecological Technology Public Welfare Project was also officially launched at the meeting.
According to the plan, the Green Link Fund will work with partners such as the Institute of Geographic Sciences and Natural Resources Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the Institute of Geography and Earth Ecology, Mongolian Academy of Sciences, and will work with relevant Mongolian government departments to jointly establish an international desertification control test base on the Siberian cold current and the Mongolian sandstorm must pass through to the south.
LIU Shu, Honorary Chairman of the CBCGDF and former Vice President of China Association for Science and Technology, who has long been committed to desertification control and Qian Xuesen's sand industry concept, also sent a congratulatory letter.
At this time, when we look back at the commemorative film "Turning Barren Land into Fertile Land", it is of great significance. As LV Tongyu, the director of the Green Link Fund Management Committee and the first chairman of the China Deer Foundation (the predecessor of the CBCGDF, said in his speech: We are doing work that is "in the same vein" as our predecessors.
