Bontebok Horns Seized
Recently, when inspecting inbound flights, customs officers at Beijing Daxing Airport Customs found an abnormal image of the luggage of a passenger who chose to go through the declaration-free channel. After unpacking and checking, customs officers found suspected animal horns and suspected animal leather in his luggage. After identification, six of them were Bontebok horns (Damaliscus pygargus). The Bontebok are endangered animals listed in Appendix II of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).
The bontebok is an antelope found in South Africa, Lesotho and Namibia. The bontebok is the provincial animal of Western Cape.
The harm of illegal wildlife trade cannot be underestimated. Often, illegal wildlife trade is hidden and transnational, making it difficult to combat. Call on people to consciously boycott wildlife products and not to buy, eat or carry any wildlife products.
