ZHOU Jinfeng Delivered a Keynote Speech at the "Ecological Civilization and Sustainable Development" Summit Forum: Enchanting China and Eco-Civilization

On September 21, 2024, Dr. ZHOU Jinfeng, Vice Chairman and Secretary-General of the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF), was invited to attend the "Ecological Civilization and Sustainable Development" Summit Forum held at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, and delivered a keynote speech on the theme of "Enchanting China and Eco-civilization".

Dr. Zhou Jinfeng reviewed the previous five mass extinctions, including the mass extinction at the end of the Permian caused by the super El NiƱo phenomenon, and today's industrial civilization is the reason for the current "sixth mass extinction" .Under the influence of industrial civilization, although countries have made many efforts to protect biodiversity for decades, none of the goals related to biodiversity protection, including the United Nations Millennium Development Goals and the Aichi Targets, have been achieved, and humans are still facing the severe challenge of accelerated extinction of global biodiversity. Therefore, human beings must practice ecological civilization and start a new way of life and production.

Then, Dr. Zhou Jinfeng introduced some successful cases of CBCGDF's practice such as the CBCGDF Community Conservation area system launched in 2016: through community protection and public participation, the wintering population of endangered great bustards has been successfully increased from 500 to more than 1,400, and the global population of great bustards has recovered to nearly 10,000; while supporting the livelihoods of beekeepers, it protects the native Chinese honey bees, avoiding the ecological function dislocation caused by beekeepers breeding Italian honey bees instead of Chinese honey bees in pursuit of economic benefits. At present, the number of CBCGDF Community Conservation areas has reached 222, effectively protecting multiple species and ecosystems.

Dr. Zhou Jinfeng further talked about the concept of " Biodiversity Conservation in Our Neighborhood " (BCON), focusing on the "Migratory Bird Lifeline" project carried out in cooperation with the State Grid - while ensuring the safety of power transmission and supply, a national bird rescue network was established, and the key paths through which birds fly were intentionally avoided when designing the lines. He elaborated on the experience of environmental public interest litigation and introduced the work carried out by CBCGDF to protect Beijing Swifts.

The forum was co-organized by the World Academy of Sustainable Development Limited (WAOSD), CBCGDF and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, and guided by the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology's Institute of Environment.
