How to break the “curse” on Chinese white dolphins? Improved fishing gear may be the solution
On September 12, 2024, Dr. Zheng Ruiqiang of the Hainan ZhiFu Sustainable Science and Technology Development Research Center was observing Chinese White Dolphins (Indo-Pacific Humpback Dolphins) in the Jiangmen waters of the Greater Bay Area, and found five individuals with "ropes" on their heads.
It is reported that these ropes are used for fixing wooden stakes on inshore oyster rafts, which have been discarded or dismantled and become fishery garbage.
The white dolphins, which are curious by nature and particularly fond of drilling circles, will be caught by the rope if they are not careful. They are like a “spell” that these large aquatic animals can't get rid of.
Increased fishing activities, habitat destruction and water pollution have made the living environment of this rare species increasingly challenging. Therefore, the improvement of fishing activities is particularly important. In addition to the improvement of traditional nets, the development of aquatic animal escape devices is also an effective solution. These measures will not only reduce the harm to the Chinese White Dolphin, but also create a safer environment for its survival.
