Tangshan Made Rectification Overnight to Extract Large Amounts of Groundwater to Raise Sea Cucumbers | CBCGDF Volunteers Promote

In early September, volunteers from the Tangshan Waterbird Conservation Area of CBCGDF reported that local farmers were digging deep wells to extract groundwater for breeding sea cucumbers and suspected of illegal theft. The incident attracted great attention from local government departments, which sealed off the illegal wells overnight to avoid further ecological damage.

According to volunteers, this kind of illegal mining has also occurred in previous years. The earliest well was dug around 2021. After the beginning of autumn this year, some farmers in Zhangjiapu area of Guhe Township, Leting County, dug deep wells without permission and extracted groundwater and deep geothermal water for use in local sea cucumber breeding greenhouses. These deep wells are usually about 300 meters deep, and the deep wells specially used for extracting geothermal water are 1,000 meters deep underground. The groundwater and geothermal water pumped up are mainly used by farmers in the process of sea cucumber breeding to increase water circulation and temperature control in the breeding greenhouse.

Groundwater resources are an important and indispensable ecological resource in the ecosystem, especially in Leting County, which is located in the coastal area of the Bohai Sea. If groundwater resources are extracted in an unordered manner for a long time, it is likely to cause seawater backflow, surface collapse and other hazards, which will also have a direct impact on the living environment of offshore organisms.

CBCGDF volunteers will continue to pay attention to the rectification of illegal groundwater extraction in Zhangjiapu area of LeTing County.
