Timeline of key meetings of the Convention on Wetlands and priorities of the Scientific and Technical Review Panel (STRP) | CBCGDF participated in Ramsar's Third Intersessional Meeting of STRP


At the invitation of the Secretariat of the Convention on Wetlands, the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) participated in the third intersessional meeting of the Scientific and Technical Review Panel (STRP) on 3 September 2024 from 18:00 to 20:00 (Beijing time). The meeting was held over two days, from 12:00 to 14:00 (CET) on 3 and 4 September 2024.




As an observer organisation of the Convention on Wetlands, the CBCGDF has long been committed to promoting the deep participation of all sectors of Chinese society in global environmental governance, protecting the sustainable development of wetland habitats, and widely mobilising local communities and people to actively participate in wetland actions and biodiversity conservation.


The purpose of the intersessional meeting of the Scientific and Technical Review Panel (STRP) meeting is to will be to present and discuss the development of draft resolutions to be submitted ahead of the 64th meeting of the Standing Committee and provide a status update regarding the STRP workplan for the 2023-2025 triennium, based on the five thematic work areas in Annex 2 of Resolution XIV.14 and in alignment with the Fourth Strategic Plan of the Convention (2016-2024). 


At the beginning of the meeting, Dr Hugh Robertson, Chair of the STRP, gave an opening speech, introducing in detail the agenda, the expected outcomes of the meeting, and the topics for the following intersessional meetings.






According to Filip Aggestam, Secretariat of the Convention, the 27th meeting of the Scientific and Technical Review Panel of the Convention on Wetlands (STRP27) will be held at the Secretariat's Headquarters in Gland, Switzerland, from 2-6 December 2024, and the registration channel is now open; in particular, he drew attention to the fact that, in accordance with the resolution of the 63rd Standing Committee Meeting (SC63), One day (6 December) will be set aside for consultations and discussions on Earth Observation Day.

In addition, he shared the timeline of major meetings leading up to COP15. [COP15 will be held in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe from 23-31 July 2025].



Then it's about the Updates from Thematic Work Area (TWA) leads – status of priority STRP tasks:

5.1. Thematic Work Area 1: Wetlands of International Importance, development of the Site network and application of criteria.

5.2. Thematic Work Area 2: Tools for wetland assessment, mapping and monitoring, and development of inventories.

5.3. Thematic Work Area 3: Direct and climate-change-related pressures on wetlands, their impacts and responses.

5.4. Thematic Work Area 4: Wise use, sustainable management and restoration of wetlands in the wider landscape/seascape.

5.5. Thematic Work Area 5: Cross-cutting issues, supporting functions, and synergies with other MEAs.




Reviewing submissions to the 64th meeting of the Standing Committee, including draft resolutions:

Filip Aggestam of the Convention secretariat, introduced the Proposed draft resolution on the future implementation of scientific and technical aspects of the Convention for 2026-2028.
