LIU Shu, Former Vice President of the China Association for Science and Technology, Talks about the Super Typhoon "Makar": Respecting and Understanding the Nature

In early September 2024, the super typhoon "Makar" hit Hainan with its amazing intensity and destructive power, becoming the strongest autumn typhoon to land in my country in recent years. It has a stable path, rapidly increased intensity, and maintained the super typhoon level for a long time, bringing major disasters and heavy losses to the Hainan area. This typhoon not only highlights the power of nature, but also reminds us that in the face of extreme weather events, humans must maintain awe of nature and strengthen disaster prevention and mitigation work.

After the typhoon, the author was worried about whether friends and predecessors in Hainan were safe. Afterwards, the author had the honor of communicating with Former Vice Chairman of the China Association for Science and Technology, Prof.. LIU Shu, who was recuperating in "Xikang Yunshe" in Chengmai, Hainan, and listened to her sharing her experience of experiencing the typhoon. Liu is a leader in China's desertification research, former vice chairman of the China Association for Science and Technology, and honorary chairman of the China Green Development Association. As a senior scientist, her feelings are undoubtedly what the author wants to know very much.

Liu recalled: "The 'Capricorn' typhoon came with great force, with strong winds and heavy rains. I witnessed with my own eyes that the lush mango trees in the yard were uprooted, and the tall banyan trees and coconut trees were broken one after another. The power of nature is really shocking!"

However, what made Liu feels relieved was that all the staff of "Yunshe" were safe and sound. This was due to the scientific and reasonable response plan of the management and the thoughtful service of the staff.

Talking about this experience, Liu was deeply moved: "The 'Capricorn' typhoon made me realize more deeply that human beings are so small in front of nature. We must respect nature and respect the laws of nature." She believes that "Yunshe" can successfully cope with this typhoon thanks to the accurate grasp of the laws of typhoons by the superior departments and the timely scientific guidance.

Liu also shared his feelings about the sandstorms in his early years, and believed that this encounter with the "Capricorn" typhoon has further strengthened his concept of "respecting nature and recognizing nature". She said that only by deeply understanding the laws of nature can we better respond to natural disasters and reduce losses.

Climate change has led to frequent extreme weather events, which has become a severe challenge facing the world. Liu's experience and insights have touched me. In the face of increasingly frequent extreme weather events, we should establish a sense of awe for nature, strengthen research on natural laws, and improve our ability to prevent and reduce disasters; at the same time, perhaps in the final analysis, we need to change the way of growth and development - green development and green consumption can actually start from everyone.
