Ramsar's Third Intersessional Meeting of the Scientific and Technical Review Panel (STRP) about to begin! CBCGDF'll take part at invitation

 

Recently, the International Department of the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) received an email from the Secretariat of the Convention on Wetlands, inviting CBCGDF to participate in its Third Intersessional Meeting of the Scientific and Technical Review Panel (STRP) to be held on 3 and 4 September 2024 from 12:00 to 14:00 (CET) [18:00 to 20:00, Beijing time, 3 and 4 September]. 


As an observer to the Convention on Wetlands, CBCGDF has long been committed to promoting the deep participation of all sectors of Chinese society in global environmental governance, protecting the sustainable development of wetland habitats, and mobilising local communities and people to actively participate in wetland action and biodiversity conservation. CBCGDF representatives have completed the online registration and will attend the conference.

Working programme


The purpose of the intersessional meeting of the Scientific and Technical Review Panel (STRP) meeting is to will be to present and discuss the development of draft resolutions to be submitted ahead of the 64th meeting of the Standing Committee and provide a status update regarding the STRP workplan for the 2023-2025 triennium, based on the five thematic work areas in Annex 2 of Resolution XIV.14 and in alignment with the Fourth Strategic Plan of the Convention (2016-2024). 


Expected outcomes 

The anticipated outcomes of the 3rd STRP intersessional are:

• To present progress made in delivering the STRP workplan for the 2023-2025 triennium, including the status of draft resolutions being prepared by the STRP;

• To provide a clear understanding of next steps and opportunities to contribute towards the development of STRP-led draft resolutions leading up to the 64th meeting of the Standing Committee.

12:30-13:00 5. Updates from Thematic Work Area (TWA) leads – status of priority STRP tasks:

5.1. Thematic Work Area 1: Wetlands of International Importance, development of the Site network and application of criteria.

5.2. Thematic Work Area 2: Tools for wetland assessment, mapping and monitoring, and development of inventories.

5.3. Thematic Work Area 3: Direct and climate-change-related pressures on wetlands, their impacts and responses.

5.4. Thematic Work Area 4: Wise use, sustainable management and restoration of wetlands in the wider landscape/seascape.

5.5. Thematic Work Area 5: Cross-cutting issues, supporting functions, and synergies with other MEAs.

13:00-14:00 6. Reviewing submissions to the 64th meeting of the Standing Committee, including draft resolutions:

6.1. Proposed draft resolution on the future implementation of scientific and technical aspects of the Convention for 2026-2028.

12:00-13:15 6. Reviewing submissions to the 64th meeting of the Standing Committee, including draft resolution:

6.2. Proposed draft resolution on Criterion 6 and Criterion 9 (Tasks 1.1a/1.1b).

6.3. Proposed draft resolution on Waterbird Population estimates and Waterbird Partnership Proposal (Task 1.1c).

6.4. Report to SC64 on approach to deliver future Global Wetland Outlooks (Task 5.3)

6.5. Report to SC64 on review of policy and legal frameworks for wetland conservation and wise use: scoping study (Task 5.4)

13:15-13:50 7. Any other business

7.1. Draft Briefing Note on OECMs as an opportunity in promoting wetland conservation and wise use (Task 4.1)

7.2. Global Wetland Outlook 2025: Assessment of costs of wetland loss and degradation update (Task 5.1). 

13:50-14:00 8. Closing remarks
