Waste Picker: the Great Contributor to the Dual Carbon Target, Circular Economy and Sustainable Development

In response to Planet vs. Plastics on Earth Day 2024, the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) on Reduce and Pick-Up Plastics Working Group has launched the Peoples vs. Plastics project. The project aims to examine the problem of plastic waste pollution from multiple perspectives, and to rally the power of society, especially the power of the silent scavengers, who play an important role in the Peoples vs. Plastics action.

In the 139th issue of Zhou Talks about Fourth Civilization, Dr. Zhou Jinfeng emphasized his respect for urban waste pickers. They earn their lives through hard labour, promote waste recycling, and are an important part of maintaining a healthy and clean city.

From the perspective of waste pickers, it is possible to understand their work situation and income level. Most waste pickers have very low incomes, earning about 20 RMB to 30 RMB per day, and make their living mainly by picking up and sorting plastic, paper shells, glass, and other waste products. Plastic waste products range from 0.8 to 2.2 RMB per kg, and the price of paper shells and glass bottles also varies.

In addition, some sanitation workers also pick up recyclable garbage and join in scavenging after work. Their work is mundane but vital, and they are the pioneers of waste separation and an important part of ecological civilization.
