HU Qingpei: The ‘Dilemma’ of New Energy Vehicles Battery Recycling

China's new energy vehicle batteries have entered the first round of ‘retirement wave’. The number of new energy vehicle batteries facing retirement every year is huge and will continue to grow in recent years. Relevant surveys show that the current formal recycling rate is less than 25%, which is a problem worthy of in-depth study.

Specifically, it can be divided into two aspects: on the one hand, where the other 75% of batteries processed through informal channels go, and what waste of resources, environmental pollution, or other social risks are caused; On the other hand, whether the 25% of the officially recycled batteries have been effectively reused, there is an urgent need to carry out targeted investigation and research at both the technical and management levels.

From a management perspective, the most crucial aspect at present is to strengthen the standardization of battery recycling channels, reduce or even eliminate informal channels for battery recycling, and improve the sustainable development of the automotive power battery industry. From a technical perspective, existing technological means can be fully utilized to carry out refined traceability engineering for the entire life cycle of batteries, achieving full traceability and identification from production, use, operation and maintenance, recycling, to final scrapping. On this basis, the full life cycle of power battery data can be fully utilized to control the recycling channel, optimize the reuse path, and decision-making on the remaining service life at different stages.
