60 Kilometers of Patrol, Cleaning up 8 Illegal Cage Nets on International Day for Biological Diversity | CBCGDF Wetland Conservation Area in Suihua
On
May 22nd, the International Day for Biological Diversity, and also the seventh
day of the Fishing Ban Season in Heilongjiang Province, a volunteer team from
Suihua Wetland Conservation Area of the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green
Development Foundation (CBCGDF) patrolled rivers in Xinhua Township, Beilin
District, and Xintou Village, Wangkui County. This patrol covered a total of 60
kilometers, with about 5 kilometers of hiking along the river. Six cage nets
and two fishing coat nets were cleared down the river.
The
cage nets cleared were about 30 meters long. The volunteers found that many of
the fish captured by the nets carried a large amount of fish eggs, but
unfortunately, most of them died.
Volunteers
have discovered a sewage discharge outlet in Dongfu Town. Although there is
information sign about the sewage discharge outlet not far away, the sewage had
obviously not been treated. The volunteers contacted the provincial and
municipal environmental protection departments, who immediately went to the
site and conducted an investigation. We shall follow the result of further
investigation.
