Legacy for the Future and Future Generations: Remembering Maurice F. Strong - Tributes and Reminiscences (Chinese version) Published!

Maurice Frederick Strong (1929-2015) was a persona sui generis, a larger-than-life individual, a rare embodiment of the background and enlightened vision needed to understand, conceptualize and launch - globally and auspiciously - the challenge of sustainable development facing humanity.

He is a world expert on environmental issues, a pioneer in environmental protection and a diplomat. He served as Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations and the first Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme.

Thanks to his efforts, the 1972 Stockholm Conference was a historic achievement. The Conference adopted the Declaration and Plan of Action on the Human Environment, which placed environmental issues at the centre of human development. The conference led to the creation of a new United Nations agency to monitor the global environment: the United Nations Environment Programme, based in Nairobi, Kenya. Today, almost every government has a department dealing with environmental issues.

Mr Strong remained Executive Director of the UN Environment Programme until 1975. Twenty years later, the United Nations asked him again to chair the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro, which resulted in three more conventions: the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, the Convention on Biological Diversity and, later, the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification.

Mr Strong is not only a founder and promoter of global environmental governance and sustainable development, but also an important mentor to many NGOs in the field of global sustainable development. His passing marks the end of an era.

In memory of Mr. Strong, a number of individuals who knew and worked with him, including the China Foundation for Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation, have co-authored the book “Legacy for the future and future generationsRemembering Maurice F. Strong-Tributes and Reminiscences.

Its Chinese version is published by the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation on 29 May 2024.

The book opens with the text of the Earth Charter. Maurice Strong had hoped that an Earth Charter would be adopted at the 1992 Rio UN Conference on Environment and Development. This was too optimistic given prevailing disagreements and conflicts. And the Earth Charter is now a formal document, a
legacy of Maurice F. Strong as a global public figure serving humankind and the Planet Earth.

This book depicts different facets of this global leader whose vision and determined efforts in the multi lateral arena have contributed to the well-being of present and future generations of humankind.
