The Summer Palace Rescued A Beijing Swift Trapped in Kuoru Pavilion

On May 19, 2024, our volunteers went to the Summer Palace to see the Beijing Swift as originally planned. This is an old practice that Beijing Swift fans have been doing for many years. In 2024, China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) launched the second phase of the new Beijing Swift Science Program, of which citizen science is an important part.

They saw the whole process of the staff of the Summer Palace rescuing the swifts trapped in the Kuoru pavilion. The incident took place in the Kuoru Pavilion of the Summer Palace. Located on the East Embankment on the central axis of the Summer Palace, it has a high elevation, wide view and vast surrounding waters, providing sufficient food sources for swifts. In addition, the building structure of the pavilion is also more complex, with more space under the eaves, which is suitable for swifts to nest and raise young. In the Summer Palace, there are developed water systems and rich vegetation, which provide abundant food sources and good ecological environment for swifts. In recent years, many Beijing swifts have nested in Kuoru Pavilion every year, and this pavilion is one of the most important habitats for swifts in Beijing.

Beijing, as the capital of China, is famous not only for its long history and culture and magnificent urban landscape, but also for its rich biodiversity. In recent years, Beijing has achieved remarkable results in biodiversity protection.

The protection and research of Beijing Swift is an important measure for Beijing to build itself as a "biodiversity capital". The Beijing Swift, the only wild migratory bird named after Beijing, is also an important part of Beijing's urban ecosystem. They trek from as far away as Africa in late spring and early summer to breed in Beijing and return to Africa in autumn and winter.
