Global Raptor Conservation: Zhou Jinfeng Invited to Attend the Second Falcon Day International Forum

On 28 May 2024, Dr Zhou Jinfeng, Secretary-General of the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF), received a formal invitation from Anton Kobyakov, Advisor to the President of the Russian Federation. Dr Zhou has been invited to attend the Second Falcon Day International Forum. The Forum is scheduled to take place on 3 September 2024 in Vladivostok, Russia. This date also marks the opening of the 9th Eastern Economic Forum, making it a significant convergence of environmental and economic discourse.

Nature knows no borders. The protection of birds of prey, such as falcons, is of paramount importance as they play a crucial role as apex predators in ecosystems. Falcons help regulate populations of rodents and other small animals, preventing them from becoming overpopulated. The health of falcon populations is an indicator of the overall health of their habitats. Protecting falcons therefore contributes to the conservation of their ecosystems and wider biodiversity. A decline in raptor numbers can lead to an increase in rodent and insect populations, which can destroy crops and spread disease. In addition, falcons have significant cultural and historical value and are considered iconic animals in many countries. Protecting these birds is also a way of preserving cultural heritage. In Russia, for example, birds of prey are symbols of strength, courage and freedom. They feature prominently in many folk tales and legends. The double-headed eagle in the Russian national emblem symbolises the power and majesty of the nation.

According to the invitation, the Second Falcon Day International Forum is strongly supported by the Russian Federal Government, the Russian Ministry of Natural Resources and the Government of the Kamchatka Region. The Falcon Day Forum is an innovative platform in the Far East to promote cooperation and dialogue between representatives of the public and private sectors, the scientific community and experts. The Forum aims to address various issues related to the conservation and propagation of rare raptor species. This international conference will bring together experts, scientists and environmentalists to promote the conservation and sustainable use of falcons and their ecosystems.

Dr Zhou, with his extensive experience and profound expertise in biodiversity conservation, is expected to share the latest developments and practical experiences of China's biodiversity conservation efforts at the Forum.

The Forum, organised by the Roscongress Foundation, will explore and promote the global conservation and sustainable use of birds of prey. The invitation highlights the achievements of the inaugural Forum in 2023, which emphasised the importance of strengthening the scientific and practical basis for the conservation of rare birds of prey and the restoration of their natural populations. This emphasis is reflected in the adoption of the 'Framework Declaration of Intent for the Conservation of the Gyrfalcon', which aims to promote international cooperation to prevent poaching and illegal trade in rare birds.
