WANG Youshao: Survey of Mangrove Biological Resources and Construction of DNA Barcode Library for Important Species

The 11th China Mangrove Academic Symposium in 2023 was held from September 15th to 17th at Jinyindao Hotel in Wenzhou City, Zhejiang Province. On September 16, Professor Frederick Dubee, Senior Advisor of China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF), was invited to attend the meeting on site. The representative of the OceanWetlands Working Group of CBCGDF also participated in the meeting online.

This Symposium covers seven themes, including scientific understanding of mangrove wetland ecosystems, mangrove restoration and blue carbon, mangrove biodiversity and ecological monitoring, mangrove pest prevention and control, sustainable use of mangroves (ecological aquaculture, ecotourism), practical cases of mangrove ecological restoration such as returning ponds to forests/wetlands, as well as mangrove management and nature education.

For a long time, CBCGDF has been committed to ocean and wetland conservation, with mangroves being one of the key ecosystems of concern. However, due to factors such as human activities and global climate change, mangrove ecosystems are facing serious challenges, such as reduced area, decreased biodiversity, and degradation of ecological functions. To address this challenge, CBCGDF has established a Mangrove Special Fund and a "OceanWetlands" communication platform, actively providing advice and suggestions on laws and regulations related to coastal wetlands.

Professor Wang Youshao from the South China Sea Institute of Oceanography, Chinese Academy of Sciences, gave a keynote report during the symposium with the theme of Survey of Mangrove Biological Resources and Construction of DNA Barcode Library for Important Species. He made a detailed presentation of his team's involvement in mangrove conservation work and projects in recent years, as well as the highlights and outcomes achieved. His team has recorded and accumulated data related to mangrove resources nationwide through various methods such as technology-based field investigations and sampling, which is very important for the research and conservation of mangroves in China.
