Volunteers Report Illegal Trading of Conophytum on Facebook to CBCGDF | Clean Internet for Conophytum(CIC-111)

Recently, the Clean Internet for Conophytum Working Group of China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation(CBCGDF) received reports from international volunteers, revealing an incident involving illegal Conophytum trade. This incident involves a Chinese vendor who was suspected of selling on Facebook Conophytum, which is listed in Appendix 3 of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), and Appendix 1 of CITES listed in Avonia quinaria.

Evidence provided by volunteers showed that the vendor was selling the plants in quantities of at least 100 plants at a time. Sales of this amount have attracted the attention of the CBCGDF Clean Internet for Conophytum because this trade has long been prohibited by South African law and China’s CITES compliance regulations, and because it may pose a serious threat to the survival of these species in the wild.

Even more worryingly, some of the plants were not grown from seeds - despite the vendor's claims. Many of the pictures in this series of reports have been inspected by two authoritative experts and determined to be wild succulent plants. This suggests that he most likely obtained the plants from illegal sources rather than growing or purchasing them legally.
