Thumbs up to Legendale Hotel Beijing for Providing “Six Pieces” Only upon Request | Case Study by CBCGDF Reduce and Pick-up Plastics Working Group

On the morning of September 1st, 2023, the staff of China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) noticed that Legendale Hotel Beijing put up a notice in the lobby that clearly states that it would not provide the “six pieces”, including toothbrush and razor, unless requested by the guest. This has been implemented since May 1st, 2020.

Through the interview with hotel staff, the author learned that in recent years, by offering the “six pieces” only upon request, the operating cost has been saved for a considerable amount, and more and more customers have understood and supported this decision.

CBCGDF has been committed to biodiversity conservation and green development for a long time, and has set up the Reduce and Pick-up Plastics Working Group, which has been working hard to promote the policy and action changes of plastic reduction and collection. Through policy suggestions, legislative suggestions, decision-making consultation, campaign for “reduction of take-away disposable tableware”, environmental public interest litigation against over-packaging of mooncakes produced by Shanghai Xinghualou, promotion of the revision of national standards on over-packaging to meet the needs of ecological civilization era, and active participation in the global plastic pollution treaty negotiation conference, CBCGDF has spared no efforts.

Several years ago, Dr. Zhou Jinfeng, Secretary General of CBCGDF, made a clear appeal, calling on China to formulate and issue standards for “green hotels” and make the culture and tourism industry a platform for the general public to practice ecological environmental protection. Therefore, Legendale Hotel Beijing deserves a thumbs up for that.

As one of the places that consume a lot of resources and produce garbage, the sustainable development of hotels has become a crucial aspect for the industry. Conventionally, many hotels often provide disposable toothbrush, toothpaste, toiletries, slippers and other items of the “six pieces” in their rooms. However, most of them eventually become garbage and are wasted, buried, or finally flow into the ocean as land-based pollutants.

Therefore, only providing the “six pieces” upon request brings three benefits: 1) It directly contributes to reducing plastic pollution. 2) It helps to avoid wastes. 3) Most importantly, this measure embodies the sense of responsibility and positive response of the hotel industry to environmental protection.
