Letter CBCGDF Volunteers: Large-scale Demolition and Construction Should Be Avoided When Renovating Parks in Our Neighbourhood

Recently, the Research Department of the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) received a letter from volunteers stating that while walking at Dongshengbajia Country Park in Haidian District recently, the CBCGDF volunteers discovered that a construction project in the southwest of the park was nearing completion, and "the trees have all been cut down."

( Photographed by CBCGDF volunteers, the trees were cut down and prepared to be taken away. Some trunks are already as thick as a bowl.)

According to the description of the volunteers, “this park is very good, with lush trees and lush natural grass. It is an important place for surrounding residents to walk, run, and rest every day. There are artificial lakes, wild ducks, etc. in the park. Children play by the lake. In winter, the lake is a children's skating paradise."

Volunteers believe that the sudden transformation now will not only destroy the natural ecological environment that has been formed, but also waste national funds.

The transformation of city parks should strengthen the construction of ecological functions, protect biodiversity, continue to expand green spaces, explore scientific conservation and management methods, and allow parks to play more ecological and people-benefiting functions instead of cutting the trees down for demolition and construction. “It’s such a pity to cut down so many trees!” the volunteer finally lamented.
