CBCGDFer's Observations from China-Latin America Energy Cooperation Forum at the Global Energy Interconnection Conference 2023

 On September 27, 2023, the 2023 Global Energy Interconnection Conference held in Beijing featured several captivating thematic forums. Representatives from the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) were invited to attend.

During the "Sino-Latin American Energy Cooperation: New Opportunities for Energy Transition" thematic forum, CBCGDF delegates noted the presence of esteemed speakers, which included Qiu Xiaoqi, the Special Representative of the Chinese Government for Latin American Affairs; Gloria Alvarenga, the Director of Energy Integration, Accessibility, and Security at OLADE (Latin American Energy Organization); Xu Haoliang, the Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations and Associate Administrator of UNDP; and Professor Jeffrey D. Sachs, the Chairman of the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network (UNSDSN), among others. Dr. Cheng Zhiqiang, the Executive Secretary for Cooperation of the Global Energy Interconnection Development and Cooperation Organization (GEIDCO), moderated this forum, and the CBCGDF representatives were present during the opening session.

Firstly, Qiu Xiaoqi, the Special Representative of the Chinese Government for Latin American Affairs, provided insights into the energy internet and green development in Latin America during her opening address. He emphasized the critical role of energy Interconnection, accessibility, and security, particularly in achieving sustainable development goals in Latin American countries.

Subsequently, Gloria Alvarenga from the Latin American Energy Organization (OLADE) shared insights into OLADE's work in energy integration, accessibility, and security. She stressed the significance of energy cooperation among Latin American nations and underscored the importance of collective efforts to achieve energy sustainability.

Xu Haoliang, the Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations and Associate Administrator of UNDP, highlighted the United Nations' efforts in the field of sustainable development. He emphasized the pivotal role of the energy Interconnection in realizing the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals and urged nations to enhance their cooperation for the promotion of clean energy and efforts to combat climate change.

Professor Jeffrey D. Sachs, Chairman of the UNSDSN, shared his vision for the global energy internet. He emphasized the close link between sustainable development and the energy internet, advocating for globalization, technology, and international collaboration as essential tools in addressing climate change between China and South American countries.

As observed by the CBCGDF representatives, this Forum showcased the high level of interest and commitment of both China and Latin America to the concept of the energy internet and climate actions. It underscored the vital role of energy cooperation in global sustainable development efforts.
