Empowering the People: CBCGDF's Human-based Approach to Tackling Plastic Pollution | Reduce & Pick-up Plastics Initiative's 2024 Strategy Mapped Out

On the morning of September 18, 2023, the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) Secretariat, together with the Beat Plastic Pollution Working Group and the Policy and Legal Research team, convened a working meeting to outline and emphasize the key priorities for the "Beat Plastic Pollution" efforts in 2024. The core focus of this meeting was "People's participation," highlighting the critical role of Human-based Solutions (HbS) in addressing the global plastic pollution issue. Dr. Zhou Jinfeng, the Secretary-General of CBCGDF, chaired the meeting and emphasized the effectiveness of Human-based Solutions, especially in response to the 2024 World Earth Day theme, "Planet vs. Plastics."

The meeting commenced with a summary of the tireless efforts and interim achievements of CBCGDF's volunteer teams, Community Conservation Areas (CCAfa) projects, youth and international teams in the realms of "Beat Plastic Pollution" and "China's Battle Against Plastics" from 2020 to 2023. These teams have been actively engaged in addressing plastic pollution through various activities, advocating for the reduction of single-use plastic products, organizing plastic waste clean-up campaigns, and promoting green concepts and sustainable lifestyles.

CBCGDF's Policy and Legal Research team presented a series of efforts and current progress made over the past three years in advocating for the reduction of disposable packaging, promoting eco-friendly Dragon Boat Festival practices, environmental public interest lawsuits against excessive Mooncake packaging, and pushing for the amendment of national standards to restrict excessive packaging.

One of the central focuses of the meeting was the emphasis on "People's participation." The active involvement of the general public is a key factor and a grassroots solution to addressing plastic pollution. Plastic pollution has become a global issue affecting our environment, health, and sustainable development. Therefore, widespread societal participation, including governments, businesses, NGOs, and ordinary citizens, is needed to collectively tackle this challenge.

Dr. Zhou Jinfeng highlighted that Human-based Solutions are an effective approach to address the 2024 World Earth Day theme, "Planet vs. Plastics." This theme underscores the need for global action to reduce plastic pollution and protect our planet. Human-based Solutions emphasize the importance of education, advocacy, technological innovation, and policy support to encourage people to reduce the use of single-use plastic products, improve plastic recycling and circular economy systems, and promote sustainable production and consumption patterns.

The meeting outlined the general direction for the "Beat Plastic Pollution" efforts in 2024 and clarified the key annual focus areas, particularly in supporting the 2024 World Earth Day theme, "Planet vs. Plastics."
