To promote the Coexistence between Birds and Power Lines | CBCGDF on a Research to Jinhua, Zhejiang

Energy sector encounters conflicts with birds, posing significant obstacles to safe power transmission. A team from China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) went to Jinhua, Zhejiang at the kind invitation of local State Grid Power Company in early September 2023, for field research on the interaction between birds and transmission lines.

It's found that the staff of the State Grid Power Company (Jinhua) have done a very thorough job, for birds of all sizes, with different ways of conservation to promote the coexistence between wild birds and power lines.

For small and medium-sized birds: block the danger zone and introduce safe areas for nesting.

For power transmission towers that may have problems, on the one hand, the power company have blocked the area where birds are prone to build nests above some sensitive electrical components; and on the other hand, they artificially guided birds to the safe area by placing bird-guiding frames (a bird-guiding frame is only 12 yuan) on the same power tower.

According to incomplete statistics of State Grid Jinhua Power Supply Company, from 2017 to 2021, the grid company has installed more than 17,000 such artificial bird attractors, with a successful utilization rate of 26.3%-36.6%, i.e., close to 1/3 or more of the nests are being used by wild birds.

For large birds: Be fully-prepared to take safety precautions in advance.

At the end of December 2022, a large group (more than 40) of Oriental white storks came to Jinhua's mountainous Wuyi County and stayed on the power tower for more than a month. The large amount of bird droppings excreted during the concentrated rest caused several tripping. Currently, in order to avoid abnormalities in transmission lines that may be caused by the arrival of Oriental White Storks, the Wuyi Power Supply Company has installed bird-proof spikes on the power towers where Oriental White Storks like to stay. And protective baffles will be installed on power towers with sensitive power structures prior to this winter as a precaution.

Jinhua City has a suitable climate and sufficient rainfall. There are many large and small wetlands in the jurisdiction. Its good natural ecological environment attracts many wild birds. In general, the ecological prevention and management of small and medium-sized wild birds has been achieved. The results are obvious; Jinhua Power Company is currently actively preparing for the newly arrived large birds.
