Haidian District Forestry Station Visits CBCGDF to Respond to Public Concern about the Upgrading and Renovation of Dongsheng Bajia Countryside Park

On September 25th, representatives of the Haidian District Forestry Station and the government institution of Dongsheng Bajia Countryside Park, together with the supervisory unit and the design unit of the park’s upgrading and renovation came to China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) to respond the issues mentioned in CBCGDF volunteers' letter which "a project in construction has cut down all the trees" in the southwest of the Dongsheng Bajia Countryside Park of Haidian District, Beijing.

The representative of Haidian District Forestry Station expressed gratitude to the volunteers and CBCGDF for their attention and supervision on the upgrading and renovation of the park. They reported that the suburban park covers an area of about 1200 acres and was originally used as a local collective land. In 2000, it was used for greening isolation, and was mostly planted with some poplar and willow trees by villagers. In 2008, the countryside park was launched with roads and some infrastructure construction. However, the forest situation in the park did not change much. In recent years, with the development and occupancy of surrounding residential areas, the density of personnel has increased. The problems of forest dense planting, aging, disease and single species had come out, and the single function of the park cannot meet the needs of residents for leisure and fitness. So they bagan the park upgrading and renovating project adhering to principles including ecological priority.

Mr. Ma Yong, Deputy Secretary General of CBCGDF, proposed the following suggestions:

  1. To strengthen the disclosure of information on the design and planning plans for park upgrading and renovation, allowing the public to fully understand and be informed, which also helps to reduce public concerns about the destruction of ecology;
  2. To fully display relevant data on the progress of construction, renovation goals, and effects, which is also a process for the public to fully understand the project;
  3. To pay attention to the conservation and restoration of biodiversity in parks, enabling them to provide more diverse ecological and social functions, and become a base for biodiversity and nature education;
  4. To improve the renovation standards of parks from a more sustainable perspective, and empower the park with more functions such as smoke-free parks and zero waste parks.
