A Street Corner “Rewilding” in Beijing | CBCGDF BCON Case (BCON-201)

Recently, the staff of the Biodiversity Conservation in Our Neighborhood Working Group of China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation  (CBCGDF BCON) made a gratifying discovery. On September 15, 2023,  CBCGDF BCON staff recorded a land near the Wensheng Temple that may look like a "wasteland" area, actually teeming with vibrant biodiversity.

It is just a street corner, located in a small partition between the temple and Zhongguancun Square. Apparently no one has managed it for a while. In this "wasteland", we were surprised to find a variety of small bugs, which have found their own living space in this seemingly chaotic wilderness. Even more impressively, a group of sparrows have also found a food source here, pecking at the "seeds and bugs" growing in the area.

This discovery reminds us that the vitality of nature remains resilient in the central city. The existence of this "wasteland" demonstrates the importance of biodiversity, which can also find opportunities for survival in urban environments. We should be less diligent in pulling weeds and have more of a natural ecology and a harmonious coexistence between man and nature. This is also the mission that CBCGDF has been committed to, promoting biodiversity conservation and sustainable green development.
