Thumbs up for the INC-5 Host Country's Efforts to Limit Plastic in Busan | CBCGDF INC-5 Delegation's Observations
The fifth session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee for the "Plastics Treaty" (INC-5) held in Busan, South Korea from November 25 to December 1, 2024 has entered the third day. The agenda for the meeting on November 27, 2024 is as follows:
As an observer to the INC-5, the International Department of the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) has sent its CBCGDF INC-5 delegation to attend the INC-5 in Busan, South Korea.
If you participate in the INC-5 on site, participants will be able to find out about the ban and restriction of plastic. This time, Busan, South Korea, has carefully designed the plastic-free conference, and the plastic restriction work in Busan is also outstanding.
At the Busan Exhibition and Convention Center (BEXCO) this time, various environmental enthusiasts held posters to call for attention to the problem of plastic pollution, which has attracted the attention of participants from all over the world who are concerned about plastic pollution. In front of the venue, a sculpture of a whale with plastic waste all over its body was carefully designed using waste plastic mesh, discarded plastic waste and other raw materials. It directly and shockingly shows that marine life is deeply poisoned by plastic pollution, which is thought-provoking.
For the plastic restriction conference, the work of INC-5 venue in reducing plastic waste is also commendable. Participants bring their own water cups to the meeting, and there are no disposable plastic cups at the meeting site; the coffee cups and cup lids in the venue restaurant and cafe are all paper cups and paper lids, avoiding the use of plastic coffee cup lids.
On November 26, Busan was rainy and participants held umbrellas and waited to enter the venue. For the cleaning of the water droplets on the umbrellas of the participants, the venue carefully used a cloth umbrella cleaning device instead of a plastic umbrella bagging device, thereby greatly reducing the use of umbrella plastic bags. The garbage recycling device at the venue also carefully adopted a detailed garbage classification, and the trash cans used were reusable trash cans made of paper shells instead of traditional plastic trash cans.
As for Busan's efforts in holding this conference, posters on reducing plastic pollution can be seen everywhere in Busan's subway stations and bus stops. The meaning expressed by the poster design is intuitive and easy to resonate. The Haeundae Hotel next to the venue does not provide disposable toiletries, and the yogurt sold in supermarkets and convenience stores does not come with disposable plastic spoons unless requested. In terms of plastic restriction, the host venue of INC-5 and Busan City have undoubtedly made efforts.
