The COP29 Declaration on Water for Climate Action Issued

On the last day of its thematic agenda, the COP29 Presidency unveiled Water for Climate Action, a component of its Action Agenda. This initiative features a declaration that has garnered support from nearly 50 nations, pledging to adopt comprehensive strategies to address the causes and effects of climate change on water basins, and fostering enhanced regional and international collaboration.

The declaration also advocates for the incorporation of water-related mitigation and adaptation strategies into national climate policies, encompassing Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and National Adaptation Plans (NAPs). To bolster these endeavors, signatories are committed to enhancing the scientific understanding of climate change's causes and impacts on water resources and basins, facilitated by data sharing and the development of new basin-wide climate scenarios.

Additionally, the Baku Dialogue on Water for Climate Action was inaugurated, featuring high-ranking officials from the European Union, Finland, Gambia, Germany, Moldova, the Netherlands, Slovenia, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The Baku Dialogue aims to maintain momentum between annual UN climate talks and encourage coherence and cooperation. It seeks to consistently highlight the importance of water and its interconnections with climate change, biodiversity decline, pollution, and desertification, with a focus on actions at international, regional, river, and basin levels.
