CBCGDF Delegation Is about to Go to South Korea for the INC-5! Pre-departure Meeting Held on November 13
On the afternoon of November 13, 2024, the INC-5 delegation of the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) held its first pre-departure meeting. The meeting was chaired by Ms. WANG Huo, Deputy Secretary-General of the CBCGDF and General Manager of the INC-5 delegation. At the meeting, the background of the INC-5 conference, the current preliminary agenda, the main topics of the conference, and a Q&A were introduced to fully prepare for the delegation's departure.
The INC-5 will be held at the Busan Exhibition and Convention Center in South Korea from November 25 to December 1, 2024. It aims to promote the development of a legally binding international agreement to address the growing problem of plastic pollution, especially plastic pollution in the marine environment. Countries around the world will come together to discuss policies and strive to reach a consensus on global response to plastic pollution and promote sustainable development.
At the preparatory meeting, Dr. ZHAO Yan from the School of International Affairs and Public Administration of Ocean University of China was officially appointed as the head of the delegation, and Mr. ZAHNG Xiaowei from the Globalization and Development (GAD) major of Beijing Normal University-Hong Kong Baptist University United International College (BNU-HKBU UIC) served as the deputy head of the delegation. Professor TIAN Song of Southern University of Science and Technology served as a consultant to provide professional guidance to the team. During this trip, the INC-5 delegation of CBCGDF will actively participate in this important meeting and contribute the wisdom and strength of Chinese social organizations and youth to the conclusion of a globally binding treaty on plastic pollution.
CBCGDF has long been an active participant and supporter in the global response to plastic pollution, promoting plastic reduction and collection and reducing the generation of plastic waste from multiple aspects such as policies, laws and public participation. Specific actions include, but are not limited to, promoting changes in China's plastic pollution prevention and control policies, providing opinions and suggestions for environmental legislation, conducting environmental public interest litigation against pollution and waste, advocating the reduction of disposable packaging and tableware, launching initiatives such as "Chopsticks Go", "Green Bottle Action", and "Light Bottle Action"; advocating the reduction of mooncake packaging, and actively promoting "green consumption rights" and responding to the climate crisis through human-based solutions (HbS); vigorously carrying out plastic reduction and collection, people's fight against plastic, scientific communication, and promoting public participation.
In addition, the International Department of CBCGDF played a decision-making advisory role in the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-5) held in 2022, participated in the drafting of the conference document "What We Expect from the United Nations Environment Programme", and witnessed the adoption of historic resolutions on plastic pollution. In the following two years, CBCGDF actively participated in the preparatory meetings of various intergovernmental negotiating committees (INC) and all previous conferences, contributing lasting strength to promoting global plastic pollution governance.
The INC-5 conference is considered an important milestone in the global fight against plastic and the response to the plastic pollution crisis. The host emphasized that this meeting is of great significance. Looking back decades later, it will be as important as looking back at the 1992 Rio Earth Summit today. I hope everyone will actively prepare, study carefully, and fully participate.
