Dr. Zhou Jinfeng discussed the "reuse economy" with PR3 Project Founder

On November 22, 2024, Dr. Zhou Jinfeng, Secretary-General of China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF), Academician of the World Academy of Arts and Sciences, and President of the World Academy of Sustainability, met online with the founder of the PR3 Project and his team to discuss how to promote the global transition to a multi-purpose“reuse economy”.

The PR3 Project is a global, multidisciplinary expert mechanism dedicated to promoting resource reuse and aims to accelerate the reuse of plastics around the world through the development of global standards. The PR3 Project has attracted the participation of more than 60 experts from around the world. PR3 is currently working with global experts to accelerate the creation of a “true reuse economy” for packaging reuse, as well as other sectors such as electronics, textiles, healthcare and construction.

PR3 project founder said that valuable natural resources are often used for disposable products and packaging, and products are rarely designed with recycled or reused components in mind. The unattributed costs of this linear economy are staggeringly high, damaging the global climate, environment and human health. She advocates for a multi-purpose economy in which every resource is valuable and single-use will be the exception rather than the norm. This shift is critical for a number of industries, including packaging, construction, electronics, etc. PR3 will enlist professionals from diverse backgrounds to work together to promote a truly circular economy. The organization will provide technical assistance, capacity building, policy advice and standards development.

Dr. Zhou Jinfeng expressed his strong support for the promotion of multi-purpose and circular economy and thanked for the invitation. He emphasized that single-use is no longer appropriate in the current era and stressed the need for change. Dr. Zhou Jinfeng raised the hope that more scientific organizations, social groups and industrial experts would be invited to participate in order to achieve truly global cooperation and substantial progress. He also mentioned the need for new organizations and teams to work together to drive the agenda in the face of new trends.

PR3 is tentatively scheduled to hold a discussion meeting on related initiatives in Italy in mid-February 2025, which Dr. Zhou Jinfeng will attend. Both agreed to strengthen communication and cooperation to jointly contribute to the global plastic pollution control.
