Degan SHU Has a Speech About Darwin: The 165th Anniversary of On the Origin of Species |ICG19

On November 21, 2024, at the 19th Annual Meeting of the International Conference on Genomics (ICG-19), Degan SHU, a Chinese evolutionary paleontologist and academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, gave a report entitled "Learning from Darwin and Developing Darwin's Theory of Evolution". Academician Degan SHU's research areas involve evolutionary biology and paleontology, and he has made important contributions, especially in the modern development and application of Darwin's theory of evolution.

CBCGDF participants noted that at this ICG19 conference, Academician Shu's report not only reviewed the historical background and basic theories of Darwin's theory of evolution, but also explored the modern development and innovative ideas of Darwin's theory of evolution from three stories. Including but not limited to: discussing Darwin's immortal ideological legacy and the confusion it faces, reviewing the historical background of the theory of evolution and the academic controversy it still causes; then, two innovative ideas were proposed, one of which was the creation of the first animal tree on Earth during the Cambrian explosion, which promoted the emergence of diverse biological forms. The second is how invertebrates evolved into vertebrates, especially exploring the evolutionary process of "the world's number one fish", which not only provides key clues to the origin of life, but also provides a new perspective for the study of genomics and evolutionary biology. Through these three stories, Professor Degan Su demonstrated the far-reaching influence and great contribution of Darwin's theory, and analyzed the limitations of his theory at the time.
