The Importance of New Energy Battery Recycling | CBCGDF Visits Vehicle Battery Production Industry of Anhui, China

Recycling new energy power batteries has become a crucial topic due to the presence of rare metals such as lithium, cobalt, and nickel. The extraction of these metals often leads to environmental pollution and resource depletion. By recycling batteries, the demand for raw minerals can be reduced, which helps alleviate the environmental burden. Improper disposal of old batteries can lead to the leakage of harmful substances into the soil and water, causing severe ecological damage. The development of the battery recycling industry can also create new job opportunities and boost the growth of related sectors.

 


The China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) has long been dedicated to observing the sustainability of energy sources and addressing the impact on biodiversity. As an observer to the UNFCCC, the International Seabed Authority (ISA), and a partner to the Convention on Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS), CBCGDF plays an active role in advocating for sustainable energy practices.

 


On the morning of Nov 27th 2024, CBCGDF representatives visited a production line in Anhui that is building a system for the recycling and secondary use of power batteries. It's impressive to see the efforts of batteries assembling and recycling.


Such initiatives are vital in ensuring that the transition to green energy is both environmentally responsible and beneficial to biodiversity. Rather than focusing on extracting more new mineral resources (even from deep sea), our approach should shift towards how to recycle and reuse existing products and resources. We believe there is significant potential in this area.
